Run
Your Car on Hydrogen:
A Risky Business? |
Sounds great doesn’t it. The fuel of the future is
Hydrogen. But Hydrogen can be very unstable. Is
this really
a sensible alternative to Gasoline?
There are two main ways to run your car on hydrogen that car
manufacturers are working on.
Combustion:
BMW have pioneered the use of hydrogen in a combustion engine, thus
allowing it also to still run on gasoline.
However, the hydrogen tank is HUGE!. It takes up the most of the trunk
space and as there are only 5 Hydrogen Fuelling stations in the world
at this point, it’s just not practical.
Plus the idea of basically having a huge explosive sat behind me in the
trunk would make the driving experience more of a nightmare than a
dream for me.
Fuel-Cell
Conversion:
The other method being proposed by car manufacturers such as Honda is
the Hydrogen fuel cell. The hydrogen is allowed to react with
oxygen and produces electricity and water. The electricity
powers
the car (similar to today’s Hybrids) and the water is
released as
waste.
This is a far cleaner option and as the hydrogen doesn’t have
to
be stored as a gas then the risks of explosion, fire etc…are
resolved.
The only problem is the technology isn’t quite there yet to
mass
produce these cars and so we’ll have to wait a little while
before it even becomes an option.
The other factor to bear in mind is how the hydrogen itself is produced.
Most hydrogen today is generated from fossil fuels and so the
“clean” energy of the future would actually produce
higher
carbon dioxide emissions than gas powered cars.
Another
alternative:
There is another alternative that gives the benefit of using the clean
energy of Hydrogen but without the dangers or added pollution.
Converting your car to run on Browns gas (HHO), which is produced from
plain old water and using that to make your car use gasoline with much
greater efficiency means that you get the best of both worlds.
Your gas costs go down, your engine runs smoother and cleaner and you
produce less carbon dioxide emissions so are kinder to the environment
too.
