Tips on saving gas:  Beat the fuel crisis!

OK.  Maybe we don’t have a fuel crisis but the cost of fuel is stupidly high.  Anything that helps to reduce the costs on the ordinary guy has got to be worth a try, right?

With that in mind let’s have a look at some of the easiest ways to minimise the costs involved in simply running a car day-to day:

Don’t drive like a maniac!

Slow down lead foot!  Where are you going in such a hurry? Driving at high speed in low gears uses a LOT more fuel than a controlled increase of speed using the gears correctly.  Driving at 55 mph in 5th gear is the most fuel efficient range, but keep that to the freeway.  Don’t do it in a 30 zone!

Cool your jets?

When the sun is beating down who wants to turn the air conditioning off?  No-one.
But a lot of the time, particularly when driving in town it’s better to have the window
open and ditch the air-con.

However, at higher speeds, particularly on the freeway, the opposite is true, having your windows open can use as much as 10% MORE fuel.

Be a smart cookie

Research the best fuel prices in your area.  Even a slight difference in price soon adds up over time.

Fuel up in the early hours or late at night when the temperature is lower.  You’ll get more fuel because it’s denser when cooler.

Don’t fill up all the way.  You can avoid spillage this way.  It may be just a splash but again it soon adds up.

Get her purring like a kitten

A well maintained and tuned up vehicle will always give you better mileage.
Under-pressure tyres, an inefficient engine, even poor idling speeds can make enough difference to your fuel costs to make it well worth your while having a good service on your car regularly. Most of the time you can do it yourself anyway.

Implementing these tips can start to have a very pleasing impact on your wallet, so
go for it!
